United Kingdom- Porphyry is a type of volcanic rock of granitic quality which is formed by a slow cooling process of igneous materials. It naturally occurs in huge vertical sheets in the quarry face which, when extracted, creates a natural smooth cleft face yet highly slip resistant in use. The natural sheet can be processed by splitting or sawing to make many different sizes for paving from cubes to slabs. It is the panacea of an ideal paving medium for any innovative designer. Porphyry can be used therefore in any size but in the same colour throughout a scheme most commonly as a porphyry sett or 'binder'. This creates colour consistancy with textured variation and size flexibility to suit quality paved environments. The colours are also ideal in modern to conservation-type areas. Porphyry's technical properties also satisfy civil and highway engineering principles. Porphyry has long been prized for its beauty and perception as a stone of royalty. In ancient times, Egyptians were one of the first people to successfully quarry the stone, and Egyptian kings and queens were the exclusive benefactors of porphyry works and masterpieces.
